The screening of the Sundance-acclaimed documentary #Aftershock brought critical local attention to Black maternal mortality in the region. A packed audience watched as the film highlighted the experiences of two families who suffered loss due to systemic failures in the healthcare system. Following the screening, a panel discussion featured experts from the healthcare field, community members with lived experiences, and doulas, moderated by Simone Lee. The discussion shed light on the urgent need for change, as both the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and the March of Dimes have identified major flaws within South Carolina’s maternal healthcare system.
